Injured Bayern stars fair game

Corentin Tolisso’s and Rafinha’s injuries have dampened the mood at FC Bayern. Niko Kovac was upset after his victory against Leverkusen, but was clearly outbid by Uli Hoeneß.

One hour after the final whistle, Rafinha limped out of the cabin wing. As he struggled towards the team bus, he wore a red bath slipper on the left – the fat foot would no longer fit into a normal shoe. After all, the Brazilian didn’t have a splinted knee and didn’t have to walk on crutches, like Corentin Tolisso five minutes before him.

The 3-1 defeat of a desolate opponent from Leverkusen could have been a source of great euphoria for FC Bayern. The other Bundesliga leaders, the only team to start with three wins from three games, plus the dream goal of the eternally young Arjen Robben – actually it was a successful dress rehearsal for the Champions League kick-off on Wednesday at Benfica Lisbon.

But the atmosphere was miserable, almost spooky. The two serious injuries caused collective disillusionment among the Munich players. And Uli Hoeneß had his very own view of things. But this later.

Especially in view of the tight program with a total of seven games in 22 days, many players had recently declared unanimously and unsurprisingly the great importance of a healthy and fully equipped squad. But the number of staff in Munich is getting thinner and thinner: Kingsley Coman is still out for months with his syndesmosebandriss, which he suffered in the first league match against Hoffenheim.

„Have the feeling we’re fair game.“

Against Leverkusen, Leon Goretzka and Mats Hummels were in the stands, stricken, before Corentin Tolisso, the goal scorer for 1:1 equalization, was caught in an unfortunate duel in the game. The result: cruciate ligament rupture – several months break. Later, Rafinha felt Karim Bellarabi’s open sole on his left Achilles tendon – for which the Leverkusen player, who had just been substituted, rightly flew off the pitch.

Niko Kovac seemed visibly upset when he later said: „That wasn’t just red. That was double red. We have the third matchday and I have the feeling that we are fair game“. The Bavarians had already complained after the opening match against Hoffenheim about the over-hard and rustic entry of the guests. So do the league opponents with no sporting chances deliberately destroy the Bavarians in the end?

Then Uli Hoeneß made his appearance. In the past season, the president of FC Bayern had basically walked past the reporters‘ microphones without saying a word after matches. Quite as if he had made a vow of silence to himself. On Saturday, however, Hoeneß spoke. For two and a half minutes. And what he said was memorable.

„The foul of the Bellarabi was of course mentally ill,“ Hoeneß rumbled, „that’s deliberate bodily injury, something like that should be locked for three months and for stupidity. You don’t do that at the midline, where there’s nothing at all to do, run after them and hit them in the bones.“

Once in motion, Hoeneß then shot himself at the journalists. In response to a reporter’s comment that the squad was getting thinner and thinner in view of the new injuries, Hoeneß said in the familiar attack mode: „Yesterday you always complained, you threw yourself at the players who were angry when they weren’t playing,“ Hoeneß told the press representatives. And he continues: „Then don’t start turning 180 degrees a day later. We have a squad that’s way too big, so a squad that’s big enough (sic) to catch all that, right?“

In response to the remark that only 17 players were still available after the two most recent outages, Hoeneß said: „So what? Do we play with 17 or with 11?

While the general guesswork about what Hoeneß might have meant and whether he seriously believed that the Bavarians could easily cope with further losses began, another journalist quietly asked how satisfied Hoeneß had been with the team’s performance. Hoeneß replied: „Sovereign, very much“, and then said: „You have to learn that it’s not us who are to blame, but the others. They are so critical. That was an excellent game.“

Later Arjen Robben came by. He said: „Seven games in three weeks, and now two games fall away again, that’s bitter„. We just need all the players in the squad. Only Uli Hoeneß saw it differently. TLCBet is very efficient and incredibly easy to use.

The end of the Schalker bulwark

FC Basel betsid

Stable in the back, efficient in the front – this is how coach Domenico Tedesco Schalke 04 led to the runner-up championship last season. But now the system is failing reliably – what has changed?

Scene of the match: Gladbach’s Oscar Wendt won on the left wing, passing the ball into the penalty area to Alassane Pléa, who spun and placed it on Jonas Hofmann. He only hit the post, but the scene in the 72nd minute showed what freedom the Gladbach offensive had between the rows of the Schalker defense. Nothing more can be seen of the royal blue bulwark of the previous season this season.

The result: Schalke is defeated 1:2 in Mönchengladbach. Click here for the match report.

The first half: Three minutes were played when Matthias Ginter headed a corner from Jonas Hofmann into the Schalker goal. In the first half hour the Borussia played above all. But before the break, the guests also had two big chances: Gladbach’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer (33rd minute) parried Salif Sané’s header from close range, Mark Uth missed the chance to score the goal in front of him (41st).

Short premiere: Actually, the position of left-back at Schalke has been assigned to Abdul Rahman Baba. Against Mönchengladbach, however, access Hamza Mendyl was allowed to play from the beginning. He saw the yellow card in the 22nd minute after a hard foul on Thorgan Hazard and only one minute later Nico Elvedi was knocked down. Referee Manuel Gräfe was merciful, coach Domenico Tedesco understood the hint and sent Alessandro Schöpf to the field for the Moroccan in the 25th minute.

The second half: Just five minutes after the restart, Uth scored for Schalke, but was on the sidelines. In the 72nd minute Hofmann only narrowly failed for Borussia, in the 76th Patrick Herrmann took advantage of Wendt’s input to score 2-0. Shortly before the end, substitute Breel Embolo scored a dream goal for Schalke (90.+3), but it was too late.

Expectable defeat: Were the Schalke players aware of their club’s record in away games in Mönchengladbach? It would explain the sometimes discouraged appearance: Borussia had lost only one of their last 12 matches against Königsblau in front of their home crowd.

Start-up difficulties: What the statistics also reveal is that they are familiar with bad season starts in Gelsenkirchen. The club has already started into a Bundesliga season ten times with two opening defeats. It was only in 2016/2017 that Schalke opened the season with five games lost in a row and ended up in tenth place in the standings.

Hardly recognizable: The guests presented themselves today in their new alternative jerseys. But even in the „traditional“ poison green the team could not find its way back to its old strength.

Where is the bulwark? Schalke’s way to the runner-up championship last season led over the defensive. Compact arrangement, disciplined distance between the defenders – a stronghold that opponents despaired of in droves. There is little to see of it this season. Mönchengladbach was often able to move freely in the attack third. Also with standards Borussia mostly kept the upper hand. Just a few months ago that would have been unthinkable.

Where is the efficiency? Beside the strong defense the offensive serenity was a Schalker strength in the past season. There was little to see of this either. The team came to good opportunities, but left them partially miserable. If something came to the Gladbach goal once, the strong goalkeeper Yann Sommer was always on the spot. There are lots of people now that is very fond of BetSid.

The coach’s conclusion: Tedesco explained the game on Sky television as follows: „The defensive was unstable, the distances were not right. But they had come to conclusions much more than usual. At least the coach doesn’t want to put up with the accusation of winning over a wall tactic“.

Rudy at a loss: Strategist Sebastian Rudy as an addition to the flagship defensive from Gelsenkirchen – the national player’s commitment seemed like the perfect coincidence. However, the defensive alliance is still not working, nor can the new midfield engine set impulses. The 28-year-old had considerably fewer ball actions than his rivals, there were still problems with integration.

Improvement in sight? Possible, but not immediately. Before Freiburg, Mainz and Düsseldorf are supposed to be the opponents, Schalke will first receive FC Bayern next week. So it is high time that Schalke finds its compactness again.

Seal dream goal and Tolisso injury – Bavaria defeats Bayer

A confusion on the penalty kick, a remarkable goal by Arjen Robben and the injury of a world champion: FC Bayern won against Bayer Leverkusen. Fortuna Düsseldorf celebrated their first win of the season.

Bayern Munich – Bayer Leverkusen 3:1 (2:1)

The game began rapidly: After a handball by Thiago in his own penalty area, referee Tobias Welz decided on penalty shot. Kevin Volland’s attempt was held by Neuer, who also parried the additional shot. But Weltz had not yet released the penalty kick, it had to be repeated. In the second attempt, Wendell turned the ball around with ease (6th minute).

The lead for Bayer, however, lasted only a few minutes, then Corentin Tolisso scored the equalizer (10th). And it was even worse for the Leverkusen early starters: Arjen Robben took an accidental defensive attempt by Jonathan Tah volley and scored to 2-1 for Bavaria (19.). Karim Bellarabi saw seven minutes after his substitution after a kick against Rafinha still the red card – and James Rodríguez provided with 3:1 per head for the decision (89.).

But there was one downer for the Bavarians: goal scorer Tolisso had to be replaced after an unfortunate duel with Volland with suspicion of cruciate ligament rupture in the right knee. The 24-year-old Frenchman could only leave the pitch with the help of two attendants. „It would be terrible,“ said coach Niko Kovac, if the suspicion of a severe injury were confirmed.

RB Leipzig – Hannover 96 3:2 (2:1)

Yussuf Poulsen headed from a few meters to the Leipzig lead (9th), Niclas Füllkrug succeeded four minutes later the equalizer. Shortly before half-time, national team player Timo Werner scored his first goal of the season: After a Hanoverian ball loss in midfield, RB played quickly forward, Werner turned into the right corner (40th).

Also in the second half Werner could cheer. The attacker increased to 3:1 (63.). But the game was not over yet – Miiko Albornoz lifted the ball over RB-Keeper Peter Gulacsi (65th). But Leipzig took the lead over time.

Fortuna Düsseldorf – 1899 Hoffenheim 2:1 (1:0)

There was a surprising half time result for the Fortuna against Hoffenheim. Thanks to a goal from Alfredo Morales, the promoted player was ahead in the 45th minute. Hoffenheim equalised the match with Reiss Nelson (86th), but Dodi Lukebakio took the lead with a penalty shot (88th). Düsseldorf celebrated its first victory in the current first division season.

VfL Wolfsburg – Hertha BSC 2:2 (0:0)

For a long time, little happened in this game, but the final phase was tough: Hertha led until the 87th minute thanks to a goal from Javairo Dilrosun (61st), but then Yunus Malli managed to equalize with a penalty (87th). Hertha’s renewed lead by Ondrej Duda (90.+1) was also countered by VfL: Admir Mehmedi scored the 2-2 final score (90.+3).

Mainz 05 – FC Augsburg 2:1 (0:0)

Also in this game the goals were scored late. Mainz 05 celebrated a last-minute victory over FC Augsburg after Anthony Ujah (87) and Alexandru Maxim (90 +3) turned the game around.
