John J. Mathews - News Hound

The News Hound lives in a large pit in the woods behind his Northern New Jersey home, which makes it difficult to access his e-mail. In Winter he moves back in with his adorable wife (The Houndess) and dog (Sasha, a.k.a Hound II), who both demand he bathe before approaching.

Jon Anthony Carr - Writer

Jon has been a writer since the age of 15, when he was inspired by his life as a gay youth growing up in small-town New England to author a short story about an army of cannibalistic, knife-wielding baby dolls. He now resides in Manhattan where he shares a home with his partner of 7 years, the devilishly handsome, soon-to-be megastar, Sergio Suhett, and their extraordinary feline, Gypsy. Contributions to Scarlet Street include Beyond the Screen (book review, SS #44) and MOMMIE DEAREST (DVD review, SS #45). His latest project is the as-yet unpublished volume Sparkle, Neely, Sparkle.

Barry Monush - Writer

Barry Monush has been writing for Scarlet Street since the last century. He occupies his spare time by sleeping with all the famous and good-looking people in Hollywood and even brings his own blanket. As the associate editor of Screen World, he has supplied misinformation to eager film fans since 1988. As a researcher at the Museum of Television & Radio, he has instant access to two episodes of IT'S ABOUT TIME. As the author of the upcoming Screen World Presents The Encyclopedia of Hollywood Film Actors, Vol. 1: 1915-1965, he has deliberately watched several films featuring Hugh Herbert.

Scarlet Street-Barry Monush

He has a severe Donald Duck fetish, nightmares about Tommy Kirk sleeping in his guest room, and wishes he had written all the best jokes from the Road pictures. He's been known to reside at Miami's Seminole-Ritz Hotel and 10086 Sunset Blvd.

Scarlet Street

Tony Dale - Writer

Tony Dale, in addition to writing for Scarlet Street, is a resident online DVD reviewer for two major websites. Offline, Tony continues to work as a cabaret singer ("Dreamers," "Songs in the Dark," and an upcoming "Favorites") actor (returning recently in Don Nigro's LOVE'S LABOURS WONNE after a seven year absence from stage work), and playwright, whose THE END OF THE WORLD ON NEW YEAR'S EVE proved to be prescient in that its nominally autobiographical hero writes reviews for a national magazine. Tony resides on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, PA, spending time taking long walks with his Siberian Husky.

Michael Draine - Writer

SCREEN AND SCREEN AGAIN regular Michael Draine's constitutional frailty has resulted not in madness, but in an acute sharpening of the senses. With scores of art-rock CD reviews and an undergrad thesis on German Expressionist Art and Cinema to his credit, this slender aesthete of comic books and silent cinema occupies the midnight hours perusing the web in search of new additions to his art collection (specialties: M.Wm. Kaluta, Charles Vess, John Totleben). Michael is currently undertaking training for a career in document conservation and restoration. He welcomes correspondence:

Erich Kuersten - Writer

Erich Kuersten was born in 1967, which makes him a child of the free love movement. He spent the 1970's in Lansdale, PA, lost in a world of Aurora monster models and UHF TV with Dr. Shock's CHILLER THEATER. His favorite films even then were PLAN NINE, THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE, VOODOO MAN, THE GIANT CLAW, RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE, THE KILLER SHREWS, THE GHOSTS OF HANLEY HOUSE, BRIDE OF THE MONSTER and KILLERS FROM SPACE. He also dug TV shows like ULTRAMAN, JOHNNY SOCKO, SPACE GIANTS, etc. A move to NJ and the advent of VCRs made him even less social in nature.

Scarlet Street-Erich Kuersten

Eventually sex, drugs and rock and roll lured him from his shell and he went to Syracuse University, moved to Seattle, boomeranged back to Jersey and eventually wound up totally fabulous, and poor, in Manhattan. Today, in addition to writing for SS and watching films like SPECIES and GHOSTS OF MARS over and over on his DVD player, Erich finds time for freelance writing, radio & TV voiceovers, conventional employment at a nearby art school, and coffee addiction.

Michael Barnum - Writer

Michael Barnum resides in Oregon where he is proud to say he was one of the first people on his block to get cable television . . . way back in 1972! Thanks to that innovative technology, he grew up watching afternoon B-movies on DIALING FOR DOLLARS and the Saturday night horror flicks on CREATURE FEATURES. Michael was known as the John Agar of his high school's drama department (he doesn't think that was meant it as a compliment), and his frustration at not making it in Hollywood led him to his current second career . . . interviewing those who did.

Scarlet Street-Michael Barnham

He is trying to do his level best to get down on paper the stories of those performers who worked during the golden age of B-filmmaking. A fan of Italian sword and sandal flicks, Roger Corman double-bills, and 1940s Universal mysteries, Michael's one test of true love is to have a would-be significant other sit through a showing of his #1 favorite film, ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, without complaining or falling asleep. Michael is currently single. He has had articles published in Filmfax, Films of the Golden Age, and Classic Images.

Scarlet Street

Todd Livingston - Writer

In 1995, Todd Livingston thumbed his nose at a successful ten year career writing and performing in the acclaimed comedy group Open Season, who often shared a stage with Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, and Jerry Seinfeld. During that time, he acted in Umberto Lenzi's cult classic PAURA NEL BIUO (HITCHER IN THE DARK) with Josie Bissett, as well as in a bunch of television crap. Venturing into the world of film and television production, he has worked closely with Jennifer Lopez, Martin Sheen, Carmen Electra, Kevin Bacon, and Stevie Wonder, to name a few.

Scarlet Street-Todd Livingston

When he is not contributing interviews and DVD reviews to Scarlet Street, Todd busies himself with cowriting and producing feature films, like the festival award winning MY ANGEL IS A CENTERFOLD and the upcoming HELL.COM, which he will also direct. Additionally, Todd has several projects in development with filmmaker Robert Tinnell.

Jeff Allen - Writer

Jeff Allen is a longtime fan and collector of fantastic film. After several job changes, house moves, and one bad marriage, he ended up in Public Television. He currently resides in Tampa and is the driving force behind Cinematheque 16 as movie promoter and reviewer for WUSF TV.

Michael D. Walker - Writer

In the movie CONTACT's opening montage, one can hear a three-second snippet of the God Shuffled His Feet album Michael did with the Crash Test Dummies. Upon seeing recording equipment, he thinks, "Gee Tobor, you're beautiful." His major weaknesses are chocolate chip ice cream, brunette actresses, and writing.

Ross Care - Writer, The Record Rack

Films as varied as ANCHORS AWEIGH, EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY, CHINATOWN, and THE DOORS finally got the best of me, and four years ago I left Amishland (Pa.) for a new life in Lalaland. My contribution to Scarlet Street has mainly been as author of the Record Rack music column (since 1993). My prime interest is composing, and since moving I've scored a revival of THE GLASS MENAGERIE starring Susan Clark--the L.A. Times called the music "enormously effective"--and worked with the City of Prague Philharmonic in the orchestration of a European feature film.

Scarlet Street-Ross Care

I've also scored short films, including the documentary, OTTO MESSMER AND FELIX THE CAT, and the all -musical short, THE WIZARD'S SON. My article on the Lux Radio Theater and other Hollywood-themed radio shows is in the new Library of Congress book, Performing Arts Broadcasting, the latest in a series of volumes to which I've contributed since 1987. Though trying to cut back on critical writing and focus more on music, I'm still working on a long-in-progress book on Hollywood music in the 1950s. http://www.rosscare.net

Tony Strauss - Writer

Author of the unreleased bestseller, "Craft Projects For Discarded Crack Vials," and the colossal off-Broadway smash, "Mind Your Own Bananas," Tony Strauss still keeps in touch with the little people by ruling his low-rent housing projects with an iron fist. Never happy with a moment's peace, he can always be found juggling at least four tasks at any given time. He writes (but doesn't seem to sell) screenplays, does freelance illustration work, designs and maintains a web page, and occasionally dabbles in the frightening world of independent filmmaking.

Scarlet Street-Tony Strauss

Despite his love of movies, he rarely goes to the theatre because nobody can keep their damn mouth shut for ten seconds--let alone two hours--and as a result spends far too much money on home video media. He is currently authoring and illustrating a comic book project entitled "Welcome," but someday hopes to fulfill his lifelong dream of writing for a mystery and horror magazine.

Scarlet Street

Drew Sullivan - Writer

Drew has been with ScarletStreet.com from the beginning, reporting with charm and bitchiness on such films as INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. Before entering the fourth estate (he was kicked out of the first three), Drew was an openly gay actor, often staying open as late as four in the morning. His greatest success was in the title role of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, following in a great family tradition. (His mother was the streetcar that ran down Margaret O'Brien in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS.) Drew likes hats.

Jeff Thompson - Writer

Jeff Thompson has subscribed to Scarlet Street since issue number one, and he has written occasional articles and reviews for Scarlet Street since #28. Jeff's work also has been published in Filmfax, Imagi-Movies, Mad About Movies, Midnight Marquee, Movie Club, and Paperback Parade. He has written book chapters for Dark Shadows: The Comic-Strip Book, Midnight Marquee Actors Series: Peter Lorre, Science-Fiction Invasions, and a college study-skills textbook.

Scarlet Street-Jeff Thompson

Jeff teaches English and study skills at Tennessee State University in Nashville, and on the weekends he announces at WAMB-AM & FM, Nashville's big-band/easy-listening radio station. At home, Jeff, a recognized expert on DARK SHADOWS, has a DARK SHADOWS guest bedroom, a popular-culture memorabilia-display room, and a PSYCHO bathroom!

Ron Morgan - Writer

Ron Morgan grew up in a small midwestern town, avoiding sports and enjoying horror and sci-fi films, from classic to trash. His earliest crush was for Charlie X, from the original STAR TREK. In time, his love for horror and sci-fi expanded into other areas including, but not limited to: film noir, British comedy, and great foreign directors (Fellini, Bergman). With interests like those it's no wonder he fell in love with Scarlet Street after running across his first issue, lucky number 13! After joining in the discussions on the message board, he was honored with a request to write reviews for the magazine. Ron eagerly agreed to be included with such a fine group of writers. Besides, it's a great change of pace from his day job cooking in a restaurant.

JoAnna Wioskowski - Writer

JoAnna's love for classic movie monsters (especially the Universal Horrors of the thirties and forties) has never diminished over the years. As a grade school kid learning the three Rs, JoAnna also found time to learn about the three B s--Boris, Bela, and Basil--and just about every other classic horror movie star. Now a member of the real world, JoAnna is an art teacher who has just about given up her social life for another year or two while frantically working towards her Masters in Art Education. When free time permits, JoAnna has lots of varied interests and one of those is freelance writing about classic film, especially classic horror.

Scarlet Street - JoAnna Wioskowski

JoAnna has written and, on occasion, also created artwork for well-known film periodicals including The Big Reel, Movie Club, and most recently, Scarlet Street. Her interest in actor Claude Rains lead to her getting the job as assistant on Claude Rains-A Comprehensive Illustrated Reference, published in 1999 by McFarland. Among her list of amusements are horror movie conventions. You can often see JoAnna wandering about the dealers room looking for more stuff to decorate the walls of her den, so stop her and say "hi." Just don't say anything negative about either Basil Rathbone or Claude Rains!

Scarlet Street

Michael Michalski - Writer

Scared silly at an early age at the sight of Bela’s Dracula and the sounds of his Grandma’s ghost stories, Mike’s predilection toward all-things-fantastic probably owes its greatest debt to the release
of Star Wars at the oh-so-impressionable age of seven. Too many comic books followed by too many old TV reruns, followed by too many movies followed by a natural inclination to write, eventually led him to college, newspapers and now to Scarlet Street.

Scarlet Street - Michael Michalski

When not reading/discussing/watching or buying movies, he also enjoys playing drums and singing in his band, amassing way-too-many collectibles and watching the timeless art of big-time pro wrestling. He also dreams about one day completing a long-ago-started film project. He resides in Windsor, Ontario, Canada (just across from Detroit, Michigan). Mike has spent the bulk of his career in varying writing/editing/photographic capacities for many different Canadian newspapers including the Toronto Sun and Windsor Star, while also spending time as a technical writer, communications rep with Scouts Canada along with his current undertaking with the Diocese of London (Ontario) Catholic Cemeteries Ministry as a marketing/design/communications rep.

Robin Anderson

TRUE FACT: Robin was born on the very day the birth control pill was legalized in the United States.

In 1966, he saw his first movie, FANTASTIC VOYAGE, and he's been doomed ever since. While Robin isn't watching "Star Trek" or movies, he's listening to movie soundtracks, posting his increasingly cranky rantings on any number of internet message boards, or discussing them with anyone within earshot.

Now that he's settled down, he's given up his only other significant hobby, stalking William Shatner.

Robin lives (if you can call it that) in Minnesota.

Joyce K. Meyer - Web Designer

Joyce has been chained to a computer since 1989, first as an average user, then as an AOL remote tech, finally on her own using her "little grey cells" developing web sites and answering calls for "help!".   Joyce, unchained, enjoys photography and attending local conventions where she can meet other mystery, science fiction, and horror fans.  "This IS NOT what I thought I'd be doing when I grew up," she laughs.  Born and raised 14 miles from NYC, Joyce now lives on a 10 acre farm outside Louisville, Ky., with her husband, 2 dogs, one cat, one cockatiel, and "several" computers.
